“Born and raised in the oldest neighborhood of Vila Real, Araucária, he was exposed to the world of independent hip hop and metal music from an early age.
Sami-R, from the contraction of Sam, his name, and Royal, his heteronym rapper with whom he first took to the stage, is one of the survivors of a lineage of rappers who defend that music cannot be seen as an accessory or a banality, but rather as an essential amulet for human survival and transcendence.
He began to develop concerts and gatherings with his community where the desire to strengthen a movement was fostered and from this excitement some of the most prominent artists in the city of Vila Real emerged.
Belonging to one of the largest and oldest collectives of rappers in the north, Brigada Real, he participated and was a driving force in several projects, such as X-Tri-lho, Punhos Cerrados, Sentimento Puro, and Ekilibrio.
He now comes, together with some of the most emerging producers in the hip hop, drum and bass scene and beyond, with a sequence of singles revisiting the themes of the R&S EP, with less obvious approaches that reflect the maturity of his work.“
With a grooving lo-fi vibe and a sense of indescribable authenticity, this track from Portuguese native Sami-R was released via dispar.art just last month. Featuring the additional talents of Gil Silva, Vaso has an old school sound to it and is armed with some serotonin-producing piano and saxophone samples that are perfectly placed. Lyrics and flow are also en pointe, making this an international hip hop release that you definitely shouldn’t sleep on.
