Cocytus is the sixth track of the album Spiral of Reflection by Ascend The Helix, a progressive metal band from Canada. The song is inspired by the river of wailing in Greek mythology, which is also the name of the frozen lake in Dante’s Inferno where traitors are punished. The lyrics of the song describe a journey through the four rounds of Cocytus: Caina, Antenora, Ptolomea, and Judecca, where different types of betrayal are met with different degrees of suffering. The song is characterized by heavy riffs, melodic vocals, and atmospheric keyboards.
