As someone who has been chronically online since 2007, I have seen many social media based calls for a general strike. A strike where everyone walks out in solidarity for a variety of causes. Especially after the Occupy Wall Street era, these calls became more frequent and popular. Most recently, calls for a general strike by Palestinians in support for them have gone viral… to no avail.
As much as I’d love for these calls to be substantive, they will always be in vain. Without material support and planning from massive unions that control major sectors of the economy, there is no material basis for social media strikes to manifest. They will simply go the way of any other trend.
This is why Shawn Fain’s call for a General Strike in 2028 is SO important. Not only is there time to prepare and build up a material base for workers to strike, it is being called on by the leader of one of the largest unions in the empire. For the first time, a general strike may be truly possible. If we can figure out a small, poignant list of demands, we may yet be victorious against the global capitalist class which is sowing the destruction of our planet so they may be rich for just a little longer. We cannot allow their greed to be our undoing.
Whoever is the next president, their tenure will surely sow only more discord among the populous and with the support of strong Union organizations, this discord can be directed into true positive change. I have said this before and will reiterate: the future of our species depends on our courage to resist. Shawn Fain and the good people at the United Auto Workers Union are leading by example in this struggle.
