A direct critique of the duplicitous and multi-faceted systems of oppression in the United States, founded on the back of Christianity, this February 2024 release from metalcore band Fear of Water is a deeply political protest anthem. A tad formulaic in composition and a pretty typical blend of alt-metal and post-hardcore, where Systemic really succeeds is in songwriting and in its sense of plain transparency. It’s never unclear for a moment what this track is trying to say, and that brand of directness is rare and refreshing. Featuring the guest talents of Gemini Syndrome’s Aaron Nordstrom, Fear of Water delivers a potent dose of reality with Systemic.
