Zach Tabori writes and listens with his mind wide open. Ranging from prog to electro-pop to full-on experimental music, Tabori’s music is full of caution-to-the-wind axe-shredding used in pop-forward contexts. On Tabori’s 2022 albums, Hard Boiled and Soft Boiled, his virtuosic guitar figures provide dramatic action in knotty songs with indelible refrains. Tabori passes through most rock music styles since the advent of the genre, with detours into funk and jazz. His newest magnum opus, Rotten, is the rare Tabori work to eschew guitar entirely. It’s an avant-classical-influenced orchestral work full of jittery string themes, queasy horn blasts, and explosive flurries of malleted instruments. But even at ambitious and outré moments like these, Tabori’s work is playful, maintaining the exuberance of the young Zach who was enamored of Top 40 radio. Tabori has been developing his craft since he was a preteen. He began playing guitar at 11, learning his way around contrasting musical idioms through YouTube instructional clips and tablature deep dives. Over the years he has accumulated production and session credits in the spheres of pop and hip-hop, which has only helped fuel his ambitious solo efforts. Rather than bending himself to the perceived desires of given crowds or his collaborators, Tabori has synthesized his disparate skillset into a signature style and ethos, based on a hunger to keep surprising himself and find ways to sell the most unlikely and absurd musical ideas.
There’s little that I can say about this master class in satire and political exposé that it can’t say for itself. The latest release from solo artist Zach Tabori, JFK is an eviscerating hardcore punk composition that’s main focus is the fact that yes, John F. Kennedy’s dad was a Nazi sympathizer. This revelation is really no shock to anyone who considers themselves a Leftist (not to be confused with a Liberal or a Democrat). In fact, we’ve been saying it for years, but never with such perfect cadence that invokes a sense of both comedic timing and musical prowess.
