GIRL HELL 1999 – GETTING COLOR THE HARD WAY

Brooklyn’s GIRL HELL 1999 combines the moody sensuality of classic darkwave, the dissonant drive of 90s industrial rock, the punky edge of deathrock, and the DIY experimentalism of modern hyperpop to create a sound that pays deference to the past without losing sight of our present political and cultural moment. Singer/songwriter Crisis Darling weaves distorted synths and deep-in-your-solar-plexus percussion with lyrical stories of sex, death, resistance, and transcendence into a sonic tapestry equal parts gloomy, sexy, angry, and unapologetically trans—a stew of aesthetics and thematics she dubs “faggotwave.” GIRL HELL 1999 is as perfect a soundtrack for your next existential breakdown as it is for your next queer kink party.

GETTING COLOR THE HARD WAY, the latest release from underground dark wave artist GIRL HELL 1999, is a prime example of the gloomy sensuality of classic dark wave and industrial music when they’re at their best. A real  dive into the musical time machine, this track echoes the potency and undulating percussion of well known dark wave artists like TR/ST but twirls it all up with an innate sense of queerness. Penetrating, quite intentionally, into the listener’s core, GIRL HELL 1999 has a remarkable approach to sound that feels symphonic in the sense that all parts operate harmoniously within the whole.
