AJ Suede has been busy these past few months.
I missed him when he was last in New York. I’ve known him as a heavy hitter in the Seattle underground scene. A scene that has been overshadowed by an ever more powerful Amazon and corporate culture. Even in the shadow of this online retail terror; there is light in the dark.
AJ Suede gives a fresh take on Seattle’s boom bap tradition. When he performs he projects an enormous energy. His vocals are grunge, rain falling under an overcast sky. Even as he screams into the mic; he barely moves. No rap-hands, no stomping. His performance style seems to evoke the low-level frustration of living in a constant state of grey and rain.
A full self-produced project. This is AJ Suede as he is.
Underneath the flashy Trap sound that has dominated the pop charts for the past few years; there is a beast bellowing, waiting for its time.
An undertow of abrasive and subversive music is aching to hit a wider audience.
