Thornwhipped – Fear Monger – All Metal Everything

“Thornwhipped is a German Solo-Death / Melodic Death Metal Project by Stefan Wernert aka Bone from Eisenberg/Pfalz. He has been a Metal-Head since he got his first metal albums at the age of 13. Born an raised in the Black Forest area, he first played in a local Death Metal band “Conspiracy”, which also played a few local shows (1993-1995). After the band dissolved, he stepped back into serious life and kept evolving as a listener and consumer of all fine extreme metal arts. Now during the time of Autumn 2023 till Summer 2024, after having started again with playing Guitar and Bass, learning all the basics of handling all sorts of equipment, project “Thornwhipped” was born. The Debut-EP “Like Locusts We Are” initially was published on July 26th 2024 (Digital only) first on Bandcamp. Influences were and will be all kinds of Extreme Metal, but first and foremost Old School Death, Melodic Death Metal with some thrashy vibes to it. Will be a Metal-Head till all time ends.“

Released earlier this month by German metal band Thornwhipped (great name), this track is a fascinating convergence of death and thrash metal, but manages to encompass some impressive melodic elements as well. While the vocal delivery lacks a sense of nuance and depth here and there, what really shines through on Fear Monger is the roiling dreamlike approach to aggressive drum and guitar progressions. The track manages to build tension in the background and maintain a sense of complexity throughout via the instrumental. In my opinion, the composition could stand alone without a vocal, but it does add a necessary third dimension to the fold, especially later in the track when some harmonies come through.
