Experimental Music Summer Camp – Magnet Man

“”In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” – Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Buddhist monk “When you pick up a new instrument, it’s really fresh. There’s nothing more boring than virtuoso.” – Thor Harris, multi-instrumentalist In the summer of 2018, nestled in the Catskill Mountains, five eclectic musicians and friends: Anni RossiThor Harris, Kevin McMahon, Christopher Bono and Christopher Pravdica embarked on a five-day retreat, crafting 39 improvisational tracks that traversed diverse moods and styles. The chosen venue, a rustic barn studio transformed into a musical sanctuary, was integral to the project. Here, in this serene environment, a select group of musicians was invited to participate in an ambitious five-day improvisational journey. Conceptualized by Our Silent Canvas Records founder and composer Christopher Bono, the project was born during 2018, when Bono organized four different collaborative projects following the completion of the still love album from Ghost Against Ghost. Bono contacted a group of friends to form a new improvisational group. Bono also invited some guest artists to stop by on special days. These included jazz legend Karl Berger, drummer Jeremy Kinney, singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer, and Buke and Gase founder Arone Dyer.”

A rich musical tapestry filled with interconnected elements of post rock, noise rock, and a little math rock, Magnet Man is certainly magnetic and experimental, which is the entire point, it seems. Released just a couple weeks ago by musical (one-off?) entity Experimental Music Summer Camp, the origins of this track tell a tale akin to the urban legends you hear about Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, and Marlon Brando driving cross-country from NYC to LA in the wake of 9/11. Magnet Man takes instrumental indulgence to a whole new level and really delves deep into the ether with this composition that is a lot like sitting around a campfire, stoned or tripping on shrooms and chewing the fat of life.
