Now here’s something unexpected and new: an alt-metal cover version of the iconic Dolly Parton song, written and recorded as the theme for the 1980 Jane Fonda brainchild film of the same name, 9 to 5. Long revered as an anthem for both women in the workplace and a commentary on corporate greed, this is a beloved song, no question. That’s why it’s so impressively brave for anyone to attempt to do it justice with a cover version, but US metal band The Nearly Deads do just that! Remaining true to the original in tone and energy, The Nearly Deads managed to turn up the heat just a little bit on the feminist tones of Dolly’s original. 10’s across the board!
